2020 The Year Of A Much Different World! No Family Gatherings, No Travel, No Bluebird Trail Tours.

So Good To Say Goodbye To 2020

Even if it means we are all one year older, it is good to move on to a New Year! Welcome 2021 with all the positive change’s that a NewYear can bring. We hope soon that we will be able to see and hug our friends and love ones again. If we can all stay the course a bit longer, get our vaccine, ware a mask and social distance until it is safe not to have to do so.

Last year was a very different year with COVID-19 and the need to social distance and the PARKS were closed for a period of time. In a normal year we usually conduct 35 to 40 tours at Green Meadows Bluebird Trail.

During 2020 were only able to conduct 2 Tours for the general public, 7 people in in tour and 12 in the other, all wearing mask and keeping our distance.

I was successful in building a number of units and placing them in peoples yards at their homes. It was a big success this past year as gifts for Christmas or Anniversary presents for bird lovers. I built out 12 units and installed most of them already over the Christmas Holiday’s.

It has been my only way of fundraising to help offset some the cost of feeding and maintaining the Bluebird Trail. To the occasional check I receive from someone who walks the trails, takes one of my flyer’s and sends me a check because they want to support the project. To all of you who have done that this year, Thank You!

The Christmas Gift!
They make a great gift for someone you may know that loves birds and cares about conservation.

Per The Cornell Lab of Ornithology, NestWatch. We have lost 2.9 Billion birds in North America over the past 50 years.

Lack of proper habitat, pesticides, increased development and climate change, plus other things have contributed to this huge loss.
The birds need our help to provide proper and adequate nesting sites for them to be able to raise their young.

NestBox Installed in your yard.

This is a NestBox Unit that was recently installed in the open space of a backyard in West Cobb. It is amazing how driven the Bluebirds are to reproduce there young, by the time I was ready to leave this persons yard, two Bluebirds arrived to check out the new house.

They are house shopping now on the warm sunny days that we have been having recently. They will get real serious about a new home by mid-February, they will start building a nest and moving in at beginning of March. The nesting season is March through August. If you have a NestBox in your yard, now is a good time to make sure it is cleaned out and reading for them to build a new nest.

Feeder Station Installed
If you already haveNestBoxes in your yard, you might want to consider adding a dried mealworm feeder station for them. The dried mealworms are a great source of protein to add to their diet of 80% insects.

It helps them this time of year to get through the cold nights, by having a good source of food available when we have less or no insects for them to eat.

I have learned that it helps during the nesting season with the number of eggs she lays for each brood. It helps with success rate of the eggs hatching and the development of the young birds, for a greater success rate of fledglings.

If you are a serious lover of birds and have a passion for caring for the Eastern Bluebird, we are always looking for dedicated people that I can train and mentor over the next couple of years.

Since we are not doing Tours our donations and contributions are almost none existing, if you like the Bluebird Trail Project and would like to help with feeding and maintaining of the Trail. Please make your contribution payable to Friends of Green Meadows Preserve  for the Bluebird Trail. Send your contribution to:

Depending on how the COVID-19 Pandemic goes will determine when we start our Bluebird Trail Walk & Talk Tours up again. Hopefully the numbers will start decreasing after we are able to two get the two vaccine injections. Be on the lookout for scheduled dates in the coming months as we feel it is safte to schedule Tours.

My goal this New Year 2021 is to post a new and updated blog at least once a month!
Until our next blog posting,
