Winter has finally arrived, but doesn’t very much feel like winter!

Today is our first day of winter! Cool today, but near 70% on Christmas Day, no white Christmas this year.

Our Tree of Life as we like to call her, the 186 year old Southern Red Oak and how she has looked on the first day of each season this year.

FALL IS BEAUTIFUL WITH ALL THE FALLING LEAVES!

Leaves may be a lot of work for those of us that have a lot of trees in our yards, but just think of how much good they do for wildlife and as nutrients for other trees and plants.

This is our beautiful Georgia State Bird, please save your leaves for them!

Just think of all the Trees in forest, the only source of fertilizer
they get is from the falling leaves and the nutrition from when
the leaves decompose!

This Southern Red Oak Tree just turned 186 years
old this October.

This beautiful Male Bluebird is enjoying a morning
of sunning while setting on one of the feeder stations.

Please add Saturday November 13th to your
calendar and remember to come join us for our
scheduled for the Public
Bluebird Trail Walk & Talk Tour!

I hope to see you soon on a walk at the Green Meadows Preserve PARK!

The 2021 Nesting Season is coming to an end!

We have ended our nesting season with the fledging of six birds from NestBox number #1 a week ago on Monday. This year we have fledged 233 birds from the 30 NestBoxes at Green Meadows Preserve Bluebird Trail and 7 other NestBoxes at other locations.

This year we have monitored and reported to Cornell Lab of Ornithology NestWatch on the 37 NestBoxes, versus last year we monitored and reported on 51 NestBoxes.

With the ending of the 2021 Nesting Season with 233 fledged, that gives a total for the past 9 Nesting Seasons since we started the Bluebird Trail Project, a total of 2,099 birds fledged.

With those numbers anyone with a safe and properly installed NestBox should have bluebirds. As they don’t migrate, they stay with us year round.

This is the NestBox that the last baby birds fledged from on Monday August 2nd, 2021.

If you are looking foe suitable built and properly installed NestBoxes for your home yard with open spaces that would attract Bluebirds. I build and sell these units installed at your home location.

I charge $150.00 installed and that includes a one year membership in the North American Bluebird Society. It is a way of fund raising to help offset some of the cost of the dried mealworms I feed at Green Meadows Preserve Bluebird Trail.

I have probably built and installed 150 of these in Cobb CO, Atlanta and throughout Georgia. I just finished two units today that are being installed in Alabama.

I hope you will make plans to join us on one or more of our Fall Bluebird Walk and Talk Tours. Please see the dates and times on the flyer shown below.

Also we would like for you to also make plans to visit the old historical 1840’s Bullard house, which is now a Museum. It is open to the general public on the second Saturday of each month from 10:00am to 12:00 noon. Go online and make reservations for either the 10:00 or 11:00am tour.

While you are touring the old Bullard House, make sure you check out the displays in the 4th or back room of the house. These are displays for all the active projects that take place at Green Meadows Preserve PARK.

This photo shows the Bluebird Dad feeding one of the young fledgling’s, did you know that for the first 30 days after the babies fledge the nest, they have to be feed by their parents and taught how to feed themselves.

Insects count for 80 % of the Eastern Bluebirds diet! Fruit and berries make up the other 20 %.

Help us ensure that the next generations growing up in this beautiful would of ours have these same beautiful birds to enjoy. Plant native plants and avoid using harmful chemicals that kill insects. Save the insects for the birds to feed on!

Until next time thanks for your support of the Bluebird Trail Project, hope to see you on the trail one day soon.

SPRING IS IN THE AIR !

We are all feeling like and hoping that spring is just around the corner.

With early type plants starting to bud, early blooming flowers are blooming and we are thinking of spring activity. March 20th is the official first day of Spring!

The birds are very active these days finding mates and thinking nesting season. We have a number of NestBoxes with full and complete nest, but as of today no eggs yet.

It is that time of year when all the nesting activity is starting to be in full force. If you are out in the Park during these nice warm sunny days, you must be able to see all the Bluebirds checking out the NestBoxes, laying claim to the one they want for their house.

The Tree Swallows that are normally competing for the NestBoxes have not yet come back from their winter migration.

I think with the very cold weather they had in Texas, they have not been able to get back from Mexico and Central America. So the bluebirds are laying claim to whichever NestBox they want.

The snow on the ground
last week when I was
 filling the feeders.

I hope this is the last of the snow and ice for this year. It is pretty to look at, but makes it difficult to open and fill feeders when the boxes are frozen shut with ice hanging from them.

The forecast is calling for warmer days ahead.

Snow and Ice hanging from the feeders.

Remember when you are taking that walk in the PARK at Green Meadows Preserve to take a trash bag and gloves along on your walk. Remember our article on (LNT) Leave No Trace, if we all try to pickup 5 pieces of trash when we take a walk, the Park could be trash free.

If you have noticed some clearing underneath the Tree of Life recently, well the PARKS staff have been doing some clearing, so she will have nothing growing under her canopy, she will be clear all the way out to her drip line. More work to follow, but you should be able to notice a big difference, she will be even more proud and beautiful.

The Tree of Life will turn 185 years old
this coming Spring.

This year is the time to think “NATIVE” when we are making our selections on what plants to put into our yards and gardens at home. This is the year to think and take care of the three “BBB”’s.

They need all our help in planting the food
they need to survive.

We need to take care of the birds during
Cold winter days when we they have  less insects
to choose from.

Butterflies need out help as well in planting
the right host plant for them to develop, as well
as the correct plants for a good food source.

Remember this quote and try to live it daily!

A walk in the Park with nature all around
us, can help us make this come true.

This Camellia is named after my Mom Ruby Jo,
isn’t she just beautiful!
It is located in my back yard!

Until next time, remember that!
